Average Rating: Not Yet Rated

With the arrival of summer comes the need to consider power outages. Summer storms inevitably takeout power lines, leaving you vulnerable for hours or days. Investing in a diesel generator could mean more than just personal comfort; hundreds of dollars of lost food can result from as little as a days lost power. On the hottest days, the very young and the elderly need to be protected reliably. Backup power, such as that from your diesel generator, ensures their well being. Combined with a proper fuel supply, your generator has the potential to provide days of safe reliable energy.

Before you invest in a diesel generator, consider your homes energy needs as well as the reliability of the local power grid. If your area has a history of extended power outages, you may want to invest in an underground fuel storage tank to provide extended fuel usage to your generator. Generators are rated by energy output; if you are only wanting to provide power to an auxiliary freezer and/or a home refrigerator your energy needs are going to be very different from the household needed to maintain an air conditioned environment.

A good way to assess your homes energy needs is to examine your electric bill. Often the power company provides you with a history of the the previous years energy usage. This is a reliable indication of what you will need to provide in the case of an emergency outage. Remember, your diesel generator can also be used to supplement your homes power in the case of a brownout. Excess power produced can be sold back to the power company in the form of a credit.

You will also want to consider placement of your unit. Most likely, a concrete pad will be constructed to accommodate your generator. Choose a location based on ease of access. The generator should provide years of dependable service, but you will want to have proper clearance from landscaping and out buildings in order to perform routine maintenance.
