How to Switch to Healthy Food

Average Rating: Not Yet Rated

There are many aspects of nutrition that are still being debated, and certain aspects of healthy eating that are not yet known. However, healthy food is generally seen as food that nourishes the body and comes from nature. Healthy food does not necessarily equate diet food. Healthy food can be high in fat - in fact, olive oil and nuts are both high in fat and generally considered healthy - though it is usually lower in fat than unhealthy foods. These tips show one how to transition to healthy food.

First, it is important to start slowly. One of the biggest issues with weight loss diets is that people start them suddenly, without a transition. If one goes from eating cheeseburgers to eating grapefruit, the diet will not likely end up as a lifestyle, and a healthy food lifestyle is the way to keep weight off and stay healthy. Instead, one should start by cutting out unhealthy foods that are not considered favorites and substitute healthier alternatives. For instance, if one eats doughnuts out of habit and buys white bread, he or she can cut out doughnuts and purchase whole wheat bread instead.

Second, one can start cutting out more foods and adding more healthy foods in. Now, this does not mean that one cannot occasionally enjoy favorite foods. Portion control and self control are very important in terms of becoming healthy; self deprivation often leads to overindulgence. Instead, one can order a salad (with a low-fat dressing) instead of fries with a cheeseburger. Or decline the dessert at the end of the meal. Small choices can be empowering, and they do not force one to give up all culinary pleasures.

Finally, when one is weaned off of junk food and has incorporated more nutritious foods, it will be much easier to continue to eat healthy food. One may choose healthier options without having to think twice. Of course, exercise is an important aspect of good health. And some people may find that they cannot give up their favorite junk food; this is probably fine as long as they limit the portion and number of times the food is consumed.
