How To Practice Proper Tree Care

Average Rating: Not Yet Rated

Trees are often the most expensive part of a landscape. They are also the most stunning focal point. Many trees are of an exotic variety and must receive proper care in order to survive. It’s important to know the type of tree, and its needs before purchasing. This is especially true when your trees are not indigenous, but rather are accustomed to a different soil type, climate, and temperature. Know the proper steps to tree care in order to preserve your trees, ensuring them a long and beautiful life.
1. Analyze your soil before purchasing a tree. Know what minerals your soil contains, and what minerals the prospective tree needs. If necessary you can amend the soil with the necessary minerals.
2. Dig the hole for your new tree one foot wider than its root ball, and one foot deeper. Add good soil to the hole before inserting the tree. Water your new tree deeply every day for three weeks.
3. Prune your existing trees at the proper time of the year, using a clean and sharp lopper. Be sure to lop the branches off below excessive buds and branches. Certain trees require different pruning practices. Research proper tree care for your specific tree.
4. Fertilize trees two times a year; once in the fall, and again in the spring. Use the appropriate fertilizer for your specific trees. Follow directions on the fertilizer package to assure proper amounts are applied.
5. Check your trees every few months for disease. There are several bug infestations some trees are sensitive to, and some blights that other trees suffer from. Leaf infestations are also common amongst many trees. By discovering any problems early, you’re better able to treat your trees effectively, allowing them to recover faster and suffer less damage.
6. Clear away growth from surrounding plants and trees which obstruct the sun. Also remove branches from surrounding trees that inhibit your tree’s growth. Be certain not to plant new trees too closely together.
