These days, it seems that finding reasonably healthy food can be extremely challenging. Everywhere you look there are fast food restaurants serving greasy burgers and fries, vending machines full of junk food and calorie rich cafeteria food. Even many of today’s grocery stores are full of highly processed foods and provide little in the way of natural or organic produce. It may seem impossible to maintain a healthy diet, but it can be done if you know where to purchase your food.
Farmer’s Markets
Most communities have farmers markets that meet weekly or biweekly. These are excellent places to socialize with other community members and by healthy and delicious foods. Generally, vendors at farmers markets focus on selling locally grown produce, but there are several vendors that sell more unique items, such as goat’s cheese, homemade soap, beaded jewelry, cheesecake, paintings, quilts, herbs and spices, and anything else you can think of. Even if you don’t stock up on healthy produce, you can enjoy a full afternoon wandering from table to table to see all the unique displays.
Organic Grocery Stores
Many people scoff at organic and natural grocery stores, believing them to be a gathering place of the wealthy and elite. In truth, the items sold in these types of grocery stores are more affordable than one might think. Most organic stores sell bulk grain for a very moderate price, allowing customers to cut out packaging costs and do their part for the environment. Produce is slightly more expensive at organic stores, but the quality and taste is worth the extra cost.
Regular Grocery Stores
It is possible to find healthy food at your typical grocery store. Shopping at one of these stores simply requires one to pay more attention to the nutrition label and inspect produce more carefully. Aim to buy foods with fewer than five ingredients.
Gardening
There is a reason that Victory Gardens were so heavily promoted during World War II. They provide an economical way to produce enough food to feed a growing family. It is easy to garden and many people find it extremely relaxing. And there are few things as delicious as freshly picked fruits or veggies from the garden!
